Dunes Summer Theatre was built in 1941 with "a big dream to bring a taste of Hollywood to Michigan City."

The Dunes Arts Foundation, Inc., which operates Dunes Summer Theatre and

Education Programs, was incorporated in the State of Indiana on January 17th, 1952.

The theatre is located in Michiana Shores, nestled on a scenic 20 acre wooded site,

about a half mile from the Indiana Dunes and the Lake Michigan shore. The theatre

campus has 8 "sleeping" cabins for summer actors and interns, and "The Clay Cabin"

for summer art classes. Under new, professional management since the Fall of 2016,

Dunes Summer Theatre has been revitalized with much needed structural and grounds

improvements in an effort to bring patrons a quality and comfortable experience.

Our Founder: Nora Tully MacAlvay
Nora MacAlvay, an art and literature teacher, trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and Goodman Theatre School. She was passionate about theatre and literature for young people. Nora authored several novels for teenagers and, along with her mentor, playwright Charlotte Chorpenning, wrote several thoughtful and charming plays based on classic children’s stories. Nora led Dunes Arts Foundation programs for over 30 years, while serving as Artistic Director of Dunes Summer Theatre. Her ideas and dedication touched generations of aspiring young thespians. Nora's early work and vision for Dunes Summer Theatre continues to inspire us as we carry on her legacy of providing professional, quality theatre and youth programs for the entire Harbor Country region.
